The Zombies: In Color!

These four zombies are some of the major players in An American Apocalypse.  Each has a very specific role, and you may see spin-off comics of each of these characters when they were actually alive.  You can see the black and white versions on the website of the artist Jay Peteranetz  These were also created as a trading card set that will be released at the 2nd saturday art walk this weekend at the Wazee Union in Denver, CO.  Come see the An American Apocalypse team from 7p-11p this saturday March 10th!

A Hurricane: Another drink

The Hurricane is another amazing drink that is very Gulf Coast and caribbean.  Enjoy!

The Hurricane*

(With a tip of Top Hat's hat to Pat O'Brien, who invented it for his New Orleans' establishment.  A place which should be on every first-time visitor to New Orleans' list of places to visit.  And if you don't drink, enjoy the food!)

Ingredients (make it as nasty as you want it to be):

One part white rum

One part dark rum

One part high-octane dark rum

"Passion fruit" syrup (There's also a mix available from Pat O'Brien's, or you can use something like Red Hawaiian Punch, if it's around still.)

Lime juice

Prep:

Pour all ingredients into a shake with ice

Shake well

Pour into glass over additional ice

*Do Not drink and drive after this one...it will BLOW YOU AWAY!

An American Apocalypse is a graphic novel about the failed clean up and relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina.  It mixes political satire, and hoodoo mysticism to create a compelling zombie story that is ripe with political opinion.

PS-The last page has August 28th, 2005 as Hurricane Katrina's landfall date.  The correct date is the 29th of August, 2005.  I was made aware of this point after the preview was completed...it will be updated for the graphic novel.

Cate and David are both major role players in the story An American Apocalypse.  Cate is a TV news reporter sent to New Orleans to cover Hurricane Katrina, before, during, and after the storm.   Dr. David Velasquez is a professor of religious studies at a New Orleans University.  He has an office at the medical center downtown and helps with police investigations. 

The creators of An American Apocalypse were interviewed by the Aurora Sentinel newspaper in December.  Reporter Adam Goldstein wrote a fantastic article about the genesis of the book, and the political issues that occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  See the article here: Graphic Appeal by Adam Goldstein

An American Apocalypse is a Zombie story based deeply in the religious, mythical, and superstitious amalgam that is New Orleans.  New Orleans was the center of the French, English, African and Native American cultures. Many of their beliefs became distorted and mixed over the years and created the Creole culture.  The term Zombie came from the haitian-creole based cultures in the caribbean and is nothing like today's versions that are completely unintelligent brainless killing machines.  That is a version introduced in 1968 by George A. Romero for his Night of the Living Dead franchise.  The versions presented here are mystical zombies created by hoodoo mysticism.
